Vintage ornate Rice Seer/ Chitira padi, A versatile measuring vessel which also doubles as an auspicious ritual imperative since it is considered to be a symbol of prosperity depicting Godess Mahalakshmi…And it is used extensively in Tamilnadu during the Nalungu – a pre wedding ceremony and also in Valaikappu (a pre delivery ritual to ensure safety of both mom and child) where in the Seer is filled with turmeric laden rice grains and circled around the head of the pregnant girl, which is signified by a regional old saying in tamil “Padi Sutthi sangiyam seidhal Kodi suthamal Peru Peruvai” (Which means Making circular motion with seer around the pregnant womens head during Valaikappu ensures the umbilical cord doesnt get struck around the babys head)….A rare etched padi
