Significance of the portrait – Raja Ravi Varma was comissioned by Maharaja of Travancore for royal family portraits, during the course of time the king wanted Ravi Varma to paint the portrait of H.H. Sankara, since there was no image of Sankara for worship at the palace. Raja Ravi Varma accepted to make one, but was stressed and tormented as he has not seen H.H.Sankara nor he had an image for reference, Raja Ravi Varma sincerely prayed to H.H.Sankara and slept., miraculously H.H.Sankara appeared in dream and blessed him with his mortal form. Raja Ravi Varma woke up, started to paint the portrait using the visualization from his dream. He presented the painting to the king nervously, to his astonishment the king was overjoyed and showered Ravi Varma with lot of gifts, as it was exact and life like image of H.H.Sankara, This was that image painted without seeing the subject.
