Antique Vellikol the legendary measuring instrument of yore, it is the pioneer in weighing balance, initially these were made of wood and the markings of weight and fixtures were made of embossed in silver hence the name (Velli + Kol = Silver embossed + Stick) later silver was replaced with iron ends and fixtures but the name remains unchanged, here the long wood stick usually made of Jack wood is fitted with iron end caps and hanging hook at one end, while the opposite end had markings on wood, the Vellikol was meant to measure smaller precision weights, the object whose weight is to be determined will be hung in the hook at one side while a rope slider is held and lifted, they adjusted the ropes position on the heavy stick till it balanced straight and the corresponding position marker is checked which determines the exact weight, the markings usually went in grams and units of 10s, this was the most widely used measurement equipment in small shops, spice merchants, grocery stores etc
